A Call for Programmers

Users continue to email me and ask if the project is abandoned.

It is only abandoned if no programmers or TNG users come forward to work on it.

The code for the component is open source and available to download and work on. It always has been. The documentation is within the code.

Go here for the alpha that works with TNG version 8.1.2.1 and Joomla 1.5. This is what we have so far. I will try to get an SVN set up.

The few issues that need to be resolved.

1) Move TNG into a subdirectory of Joomla and adjust the component accordingly.

2) TNG' version 8 javascript conflicts with Joomla's javascript and

3) Work needs to be done on the authorizations between the new TNG version 8 and the new Joomla 1.8 acl.

4) Install procedure needs to be updated for Joomla 1.8. The current joomla 1.5 install does not work for joomla 1.8.

Test site up and running

We have a working Alpha of the CMSgenealogy Component 2.

I am currently using this on my production site even though it is still buggy.

Keep in mind that these sites may be down at times while we are working on them.

Again, no time frame given as this project revolves around our families and work schedules.

Apache, PHP, and MySQL for Windows OS

The easiest setup I have found for a windows system is to use a program for Windows called Uniform Server that runs a self contained apache, php, and mysql package.

As soon as we release the component for TNG 8 it is my goal to provide self contained packages inclusive of Joomla, TNG, and our component.

This would allow the ability to either run off a memory stick or on your Windows OS computer.

Yes, We Are Still Kicking the Tires

People emailed me asking if the project is dead after the TNG developer released an email today to his subscribers.

We want you to know we are still here and appreciate our users for their understanding and support in this project.

I am not sure what the developer of TNG was eluding to in his email. We have never been offered payment to code for him nor is our project dead. We are nothing more than a hobknob group of devoted hobbiests and volunteers with big hearts that have given away the bridge at our own expense and time. This includes all you users.

We want to thank all our volunteers and users who have made this bridge what it is and we will continue with the project.

Component for TNG 8?

As of August 4th, the developer indicates that a component to work with TNG 8 is still planned, but is just delayed. He did not provide any indication of when this might occur. But from a testing perspective, no RC2 component has been sent to this tester to evaluate since late spring. As you may recall there was much effort through mid-June to get release 1 of of the component to work with TNG 7 under the various Linux and Windows configurations.

I know many of you are looking to upgrade your Joomla Genealogy site to work with TNG8. If you have followed the TNG lists you will also know that it was only recently that version 8.0.1 was released which has corrected some of the early problems with the new version. However I suspect it will be more than a few weeks before a new component is available that can be used with TNG8. In the meantime, I look at this as more opportunity to spend more time on Genealogy Research and less time upgrading my site.
